Reviews

“Called in on my way home, wow what a lovely clean and cozy pub, Toni served a good pint of ale and took my food order, when my meal came it looked good and tasted fantastic, probably one of the best lasagnes I have eaten over the last 63 years. I have eaten their before since the new management and have been equally impressed. Good value for money and lovely atmosphere.”

“Passing through between meetings and needed lunch and spotted The Heron, Looked good from the outside. Popped in to check food was on and it was. Service was brilliant from start to finish, made to feel welcome, found a seat near a plug for me etc. Food was lovely too! Would certainly recommend and go again if I was in the area.”

“The new owners have renovated this pub beautifully and tastefully. Our plates all went back well clean, so even though on the night in question their new cooker had broken down and it was back to the old cooker, it worked a treat AND we weren't kept waiting very long. Beer battered fish and chips cooked in their skins, with new peas...DELICIOUS..Can not fault this refurbished pub one jot....well done to owners and staff....and your loos..Wow..I think I might just redo my own when I return home. Thank you all.”

Our Story

Tracey & Stuart Elflett and their team welcome you with open arms to The Heron Stowbridge, situated in this beautiful and tranquil waterside location. Nestled between two rivers; The Great River Ouse on one side, and the man-made Relief Channel on the other, the building originally started life as a farmhouse before being turned into a pub/hotel for fishermen when the river cut was made. A local by the name of Albert Gyp was granted an alcohol license in the 1950’s, and the building has been a pub ever since. A favoured spot for locals, the pub attracts walkers and horse riders from local villages, and ramblers from farther afield.

Since purchasing the pub in May 2018, Stuart & Tracey have worked tirelessly to provide a complete refurbishment of the building, one which is now fit for the modern era. Great attention has gone into the detailing, from the Heron wallpaper to the usage of natural materials. Flagstone flooring, an oak bar, and wooden beams in the light and airy new restaurant space make this a stunning place to eat, drink and relax. Our Head chef takes great pride in cooking pub favourites, including fish and chips, burgers, salads as well as his pie of the day. "All our produce is locally sourced and the food is all home-cooked on the premises." says proud owner Tracey.

Outside there is site for 5 caravans, with those who have stayed marvelling at how the pace of life seemingly slows by the banks of the river. Equally, there is a great deal of interest shown in the Pontoon, with plenty of people wishing to moor up and stop for a pint! By foot or bicycle, the pub is also only a short distance from Woodlakes Park, and approximately 4 miles from the market town of Downham Market. Both the North Norfolk Coastline and Thetford Forest Park are around half an hours drive away.

Certainly with Tracey’s experience working in the hospitality sector and passion for running her own business, this provides the perfect foundation for The Heron to thrive for generations to come. Tracey explained; “I have always wanted my own venture rather than work for someone else, so I am looking forward to taking the pub further."
